Be proud Aggies!

My time at NMSU was the best time of my life...full of great memories, supportive people, and a beautiful campus life (I lived on campus my whole time there!). I know you will be sad to leave and I know right now is very unsure and most likely scary. Graduation ceremonies are the most exciting events ever! I'm so sorry you won't have one in the traditional sense...but celebrate in every way you can!!!! Don't let this get you down or take away from your accomplishments.

My mom used to tell me the story that when my oldest sister was born, there was not yet a cure for polio and she just didn't know if her children would be able to grow up safe and sound. Eventually, a vaccine was found and all four of us girls grew up to graduate from college. Two years ago, just before she passed away, my mom was able to see her granddaughter, my niece, an NMSU grad, walk across the stage with her Ph.D. It was the greatest moment of her life.

"Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise."

We will find a way through this- mostly due to your generation, who will only excel out of this darkness. I have huge faith in you. 🙂 We must just be patient, take pause, and give gratitude for the positive things we do have. And graduating from college is one of the greatest accomplishments and gifts of them all. Be proud of yourself, hold your head high, and look for the sun to rise.

- Theresa, '95, Albuquerque, NM

Dear class of 2020,

Although I don't know many of you I do want to congratulate all of you for pulling through and graduate in these weird times. With social distancing as a rule, I'm sure that you have come to appreciate the value of real human contact even more. Don't let this feeling fade away when we get back to a more normal life where we may take the presence of our friends and family for granted. It will make our world after COVID-19 a warmer one... I wish all of you a wonderful future and great fulfilling careers!
Go Aggies!

- Danny, NMSU Faculty, Las Cruces, NM

Through one of the strangest senior years, through struggle and uncertainty and grief for opportunities lost, you made it. And despite the distance, know we are all still here. Cheering for you, clapping for you, loving you. You have accomplished something extraordinary, that none of us will ever forget. In the most difficult of times, the most extraordinary people are forged to rise to the challenges they face. You have. You will. Square your shoulders and keep looking forward, in the joy of what you have accomplished, and the knowledge that your place in this changing world is yours to carve out. Remember to be kind, above all, and to reach for those different from yourself. We are all in this together, and together, we will carry on.

AGGIE Strong

Let us all pause and reflect upon how to best conclude our two, four or more years of a wonderful educational journey. The majority of us with a bachelorette degree, some with an associate’s, others with a master’s, and still others with a doctoral degree.

It does not matter which we are receiving, what matters is that we have completed our journey, and our greatest challenge is now before us. Though we will not be able to physically walk across a stage in front of our peers, family, and friends, but yet do so in a virtual ceremony. Remember that we do so united in mind and spirit and wishing each other continued success with what is yet to come, AGGIE Strong.

Though all of this is being performed in uncertain and chaotic times, remember to go forward with heads held high and always looking for that ray of sunshine yet to come. Though we could go anywhere, and we all will someday, because nothing lasts forever. Where we are right now with the rest of our team working for what I really think is a noble cause, I opt for happiness.

So, standing here with you in this overshadowing moment of time, undergoing this Virtual Graduation Ceremony and semi-standing next to you. I would like to take this time out of my ranting and congratulate everyone that I have met along the way. Fellow students, mentors, advisors, counselors, family, friends, and all the various instructors who pushed and propelled me to this educational end. Congratulations to all of us for being there for each other, AGGIE Proud and AGGIE Strong.

- Alvin, 2020 Aggie Grad

To my fellow Aggies

Your hard work does not go unnoticed. My heart goes out to you for not having a full commencement and having that experience as those who’ve graduated before you. We admire your courage and dedication through this crisis. Do not let this crisis let you down, look and think back to all the hard work and hours you’ve put in to finish what others cannot. Do it for the future Aggies of NMSU and show them that all things are possible even through crisis. Guns Up Aggies, Class of 2020.

- Christine, '92, NMSU Main Campus

Hang in there. Life get's better after college.

I didn't have much hope of landing a great job when graduating from Information Engineering Technology in 2013. I managed to get my GPA up to a 3.0 within one year of working hard. Economy was fine then but my motivation to raise my GPA to be hirable was almost too late. They say necessity is the mother of all invention.

I was lucky to find a great job at GM and that had a coding bootcamp. My degree didn't have enough skills for the real world. Even though there were plenty of CS majors in my college hire group, they taught us all the same. Find a company that allows to grow. But most importantly, work on yourself. Build the skills to make you well rounded in the work world. Be a great team player. Nothing will limit your career more than being difficult to work with. Stay out of office politics. Read some books on how to grow your Maslow's hierarchy of needs: "If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail." Have a life outside work- don't become that 20% of the team that does 80% of the work all too often. Diversify your skills and change jobs every 3 years or less. A company really can only care about its bottom line.

I wish someone would have told me how important critical thinking is. I'm the first in my family to have any sort of technical education.

I wish someone would have told me that learning is only going to get harder. College is just the intro if you want to succeed in life.

Don't get discouraged. You are graduating in a very difficult time. You will have habits that others will not. You are a different generation. You get to define what that is.

Make a routine for yourselves and use less social media. Get some sunlight, go for walks or run, and wear a mask around people if you have to be around them. You're living through history. You can only take it day-by-day. Stay in contact with your family and friends if you haven't already. Do not dwell too much on the negativity of the future. It will get better eventually.

- Kent, '13, Austin, TX

Congratulations to All the Graduating Aggies.

You have succeeded in reaching this goal. Even with the problems surrounding us in 2020, this will not stop you from reaching higher. Keep going and make your life an even greater success. No matter what you encounter in your future years, be proud of your Aggie diploma.

To all my fellow Aggies, congratulations for completion of a step on a great journey.

The joy and pride you feel is well deserved and earned. So many more great and joyous moments and steps are ahead. From here all you do is your choice.

Enjoy the process, enjoy the tough movements of decision making, enjoy the successes, enjoy and learn from the imperfect moments that result from not totally getting what you wanted, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. But always move forward to the next opportunity. Don’t dwell too long on anything. Don’t stop three feet from the gold. And never stop believing in the possible, for this is what got you here today.

Lately, do all you can to stay connected to your friends, faculty that inspired and helped, and classmates. You never know what value you can deliver to them and what they can to you, for life is all about relationships.

- Chad, '02, Chandler, Valley of the Sun, AZ

- Alma, '02, Las Cruces

Dear Aggies

It has been a pleasure to watch you learn, and to watch you learn how to learn. We hope that your first years as an Aggie (for you will always be one now) have brought you the strength to believe in what you know, the honesty to admit what you have not yet learned, the perseverance to get about learning it, and the humility to ask for help. And in a time when too much weight is laid on talking and too little on listening, these will be among your most valuable skills. So congratulations, keep safe, and rest well tonight! We will need you tomorrow.

- Kristian Finlator, NMSU Astronomy Dept.

Congratulations Aggies!! Good work!!!

- Stephanie, 2020 Aggie Grad

Congratulations Class of 2020!

I know this wasn't how you planned this, but your strength will be in learning how to flex with a truly strange situation. When I think back to my own graduation in 1976 (the bicentennial graduation), it occurs to me that we thought we were also entering a strange new world. We were among the first class to not have the draft. The Vietnam War that had dominated our childhood ended my high school senior year. I know where I was the day Kennedy was shot. We became adults with the Iran hostage crisis. I learned about feminism at NMSU and marched for the ERA which is STILL not ratified!

My point is this: you have an unprecedented challenge ahead of you. And you will figure out how to overcome it. Just like every generation before you had to overcome something unprecedented. We didn't give you a perfect world and you won't give your children one either. But, with your ability to learn and grow, you will take this education you worked so hard to achieve and make this old world better. Congratulations and welcome to the next step on your journey!

- Judy, '76, Farmington

Congratulations NMSU Class of 2020! Felicidades NMSU Clase de 2020!

I wish you all the best as you start your next adventure. It seems like just yesterday that I was graduating from NMSU and the NMSU Det 505 ROTC program. NMSU set me up for a successful career. I've had the chance to travel the world and I am forever grateful to NMSU for opening-up these amazing opportunities to this small town Alamogordo, New Mexico girl. So go out there and chase your dream!

- Susana, '96, Dayton, OH

Congratulations as you move into the next leg of your journey!

Congratulations on the completion of your degree at NMSU. Your experience at NMSU will be a wonderful platform upon which you will build your future. I know it is disappointing to not be able to participate in a commencement ceremony, because I was unable to attend my ceremony. However, over the years you will still be able to reflect on all the other memories you are taking away from your time at NMSU. So good luck in all your future endeavors. Never stop dreaming because you never know where your dreams may take you.

Perform like no one ever has before.

- Michael, '01, Kansas

Hey!! You've made it.

Hard work has gotten you here. Don't let the pandemic intimidate you! This too will pass, but what you learn from self isolating and distancing will be very valuable info going forward. You are the pioneers moving into a very different world. Use your creativity and energy to make this world a better safer place. Congratulations!! I remember graduating and how elated I was. Even if you don't get to have a "formal" celebration, remember that doesn't change the fact that you have accomplished a great deal in your short life.
Go Aggies!!

- Page, '68, Edmonds

Congratulations Marissa! Woohoo!!!

I'm very proud of your academic and societal achievement. Your contributions to helping kids and adults in need and your zest for doing so is amazing and admirable. As you continue your journey towards earning an advanced degree at North Texas, know that you were born an Aggie and as we say, "Guns Up!" To mean this means give it all you got and when you're at a road block, give it more. Maybe pivot, try a different approach, and never ever give up through all the trials and success - it's a wonderful journey, believe me. Enjoy it! May God bless you always.
